Historic Buildings Adapted. Repair and re-use of old and often historic buildings forms a major part of the range projects undertaken by Robinson Thorne Architects. The careful alteration of existing buildings for contemporary uses provides specific challenges which always require a highly individual site specific and customised approach. Such an approach has been at the heart of the work undertaken by RTA over the last twenty five years.
The Longwall Street project in Oxford involved the complete refurbishment of a dilapidated terrace of five Georgian houses, for Magdalen College. This included the demolition of more recent rear additions and the re-instatement of historic room layouts. To achieve a functional and safe plan, a new staircase was constructed as a contemporary addition at the rear elevation.
