Historic Buildings Adapted. Repair and re-use of old and often historic buildings forms a major part of the range projects undertaken by Robinson Thorne Architects. The careful alteration of existing buildings for contemporary uses provides specific challenges which always require a highly individual site specific and customised approach. Such an approach has been at the heart of the work undertaken by RTA over the last twenty five years.
Cloisters Roof Conversion created new study bedrooms in the vast roof voids of the north and east ranges. To make use of these spaces, three new full height staircases had to be carefully inserted with minimal disruption to the historic room layouts of Ground and First floors, many of which remained occupied during construction works. The scheme was recognised with an award from the Oxford Preservation Trust.
